The road event portfolio includes two exciting events. Both road events start in Oxford Street, next to the cricket fields where the starting groups will be formed. 

 

Both the 90km and 46km distances are Cycling SA sanctioned events. E-bikes are allowed as a seperate starting group in the 46km event.

 

The road enthusiast may choose between The Winelands Meander (46km medium distance event) or The Wheatlands Dash (90km long distance event).

Lead Vehicles for both events are supplied by Land Rover N1 City.

Please note that all Road event entries, boards, timing, finish photos and results will be managed through RACETEC.  PPA memberships do not apply. The Road events are sanctioned by Cycling South Africa and participants who are not a member of Cycling SA will be required to purchase a day license.

After completing their respective events, participants will return to the Cricket Field to receive their medal and refreshments.

Road Cycling Stage Racing comes to Joburg this year in
the form of the 4-Day Tour du Nord Stage race from
12-15 May 2022, encompassing a total distance of
371km and 4225m vertical ascent.
The four-day road cycling tour is based at Silverstar
Casino on the West-Rand and limited to 450 entries.
It caters for all CSA racing category cyclists up to 60+
Veteran Men, as well elite women and Open/Seeded
riders who have a normal CSA affiliation.
Entries are now open for the Tour at a 20% early bird
discount until Thursday 17 March. The normal entry fee
is R3750 and early birds will pay R3000. All entrants
receive an official Tour du Nord Velotex event T-shirt.
The tour comprises of an undulating first stage over
115km followed by a 2 nd stage in two parts. Stage 2A is
a 6.4km hill climb individual time trial while stage 2B is
a kermesse at Silverstar Casino. Stage 3 is the queen

Due to an extension of the civil contractors’ completion deadline on Bainskloof Pass to the end of April, we have been forced to move the event dates for the Gravel Monster and Boland Race of Truth.

Bainskloof Pass is a signature feature of both events and forms an integral component of the routes. Without access over the pass, it removes the essence of these events.

The completion date on the pass was today, 18 March. The road works are almost complete, but after exhaustive engagement and consideration to allow us passage, Provincial Roads and Civil Engineering requested late yesterday that we move the event dates due to legislative and liability concerns.

If we move the staging to the month of May, we’re edging too close to the Cape winter and it’s risky to stage the races over this time due to the rainfall concerns.

CSA has accommodated us with new dates on the other side of winter on which there aren’t any conflicting events. The the Gravel Monster will take place on 18 September and The Race of Truth on 2 October.

We apologise for having to amend the dates, but we would like to present the events in their true conceptual form as opposed to making irrational and non-sensical route changes which don’t serve the events or our participants.

BOLAND GRAVEL MONSTER AND RACE OF TRUTH DATE CHANGE

Due to an extension of the civil contractors’ completion deadline on Bainskloof Pass to the end of April, we have been forced to move the event dates for the Gravel Monster and Boland Race of Truth.

Bainskloof Pass is a signature feature of both events and forms an integral component of the routes. Without access over the pass, it removes the essence of these events.

The completion date on the pass was today, 18 March. The road works are almost complete, but after exhaustive engagement and consideration to allow us passage, Provincial Roads and Civil Engineering requested late yesterday that we move the event dates due to legislative and liability concerns.

If we move the staging to the month of May, we’re edging too close to the Cape winter and it’s risky to stage the races over this time due to the rainfall concerns.

CSA has accommodated us with new dates on the other side of winter on which there aren’t any conflicting events. The the Gravel Monster will take place on 18 September and The Race of Truth on 2 October.

We apologise for having to amend the dates, but we would like to present the events in their true conceptual form as opposed to making irrational and non-sensical route changes which don’t serve the events or our participants.

Start & WP 1

Riders will start their King Price Race to the Sea journey at the Huguenot Memorial Museum in Franschhoek. The scenic Franschhoek Pass will be the highlight of the day. But, riders, brace yourselves. You will commence the 7 km climb on cold legs first thing in the morning, but the downhill on the other side will be absolutely worth it! WP 1 will be at 26 km with an elevation gain of 550 metres. WP 2 is 34 km away with an elevation gain of 320 m.


WP 2

WP 2 is at Goedvertrou Wines just before Botriver at 50 km. Expect to be treated to scrumptious snacks and drinks over and above our standard Water Point fare. Toilet facilities are available. You will ride 19 km with 270 m of elevation to reach WP 3.

WP 3

WP 3 will be at Wolwekraal Farm, Caledon at 79 km. This Water Point serves as the halfway mark where the relay riders will pass the proverbial baton. This is also the official Spectator Point where supporters may join up with their riders to offer some encouragement and to cheer them along. There will be food and drinks to stock up again for the next leg of the race. From WP 3 you will ride 22 km with 260 m of elevation to reach WP 


WP4

WP4 will be at 101 km. Refuel with our basic waterpoint menu of fruit, sweets, water, Coke, Bavaria and a sports drink. From WP 4 you will ride 24 km with 320 m elevation to get to WP 5.

WP5

WP5 will be at the small village of Bovenplaats at 125 km. There will be sandwiches available for added sustenance above the standard waterpoint fare and a SURPRISE! So, make sure you do not skip this water point 😉 From here you will ride 21 km with a stiff 470 m elevation to reach WP 


WP6 & Finish

WP6 will be at 146km at Hemelrand in the Hemel en Aarde Vallei. It will be a small waterpoint with the basic fare of fruit, sweets and drinks. It is only 20 km from here to the finish with 280 m of climbing before triumphantly reaching your destination at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, Hermanus, for a hero’s welcome...

Route Description:
Day 1

Day one finds the riders leaving the Richmond Country Club and heading onto plantation roads, allowing the field to start spreading out before descending steeply into the upper reaches of the Nkobeni Valley, a tributary of the mighty Umkomaas. On the descent the scenery changes from one of eucalyptus plantations to single tracking through paperbark Acacia. The descent continues through sugar cane fields and alongside the Nkobeni River. The track will take riders under a bridge on the main R56 and then the hard work begins!

 

The climb, on jeep track through acacia woodland, is approximately 3kms. After the initial climb the track continues on an undulating contour as riders slowly make their way up the valley. Luck may have riders bumping into zebra, blue wildebeest, nyala or the ever elusive bushbuck, a few of the many species found in the Umkomaas Valley.

 

Upon exit of the valley, riders will continue on a jeep track through sugar cane and timber plantations back to the Country Club to end a +/- 60 km Day 1.


Route Description:
Day 2

Day 2 takes the riders on a small tour through the forests before entering into single track which will follow the banks of the Illovo River for approximately 10kms.

 

Jeep track will take the riders to the highest points in the district giving magnificent views of the surrounding farmlands and in the distance the Umkomaas Valley. After this climb the track takes the riders through areas of incredible beauty and in and out of timber plantations as it winds its way around the south eastern section of Richmond. En route there is a “bridge” to cross on one of the many dams in the area, making it a great spectator point. The route follows single track and jeep track and after 45kms riders will return back to the Richmond Country Club.
